| The
highlight of the 1998 Carnival parade
season was the debut of this 140-foot,
high-tech wonder of a superfloat. Made
by Kern Studios, it rides on a bed of
smoke and is covered with some 54,000
points of multicolored, end-point fiber-optic
light, which sparkle like beads of water
dripping from the biblical sea dragon's
scales. A powerful sound system rumbles
with ocean sounds and monster noises.
Individuals affiliated with Houston's
Leviathan Gas Pipeline Co. effectively
footed the $500,000-plus cost of the
float, which carries approximately 100
riders, though guarantees of multi-year
membership commitments to Orpheus. Ray Broussard, assisted by Andrew Greenberg, captured this
pano as the treasure-hoarding beast
rolled down Canal St. on Lundi Gras
1999. Look closely, and you can make
out the dome of the Hibernia National
Bank building lit up in the Mardi Gras
colors of purple, green and gold.
